Or type the command directly:

npx -y https://pdfconverteronline.com/cli/pdfco.tgz protect contract.pdf --password s3cret --no-copy
npx -y https://pdfconverteronline.com/cli/pdfco.tgz summarise paper.pdf --question "what is the main finding?"

Prefer a file? Download pdfco.mjs (2 MB) and run node pdfco.mjs.

What the AI can do with your PDFs

Each tool takes file paths and writes the result next to the input; the assistant sees where the file went and a one-line note. Ask things like "merge these three PDFs", "protect contract.pdf with a password and block copying", "what is inside invoice.pdf — any scripts or hidden metadata?" or "summarise the report and tell me what it says about pricing".

  • merge — Combine two or more PDFs into one file, in the order given.
  • split — Extract a page range into a new PDF, or split every page into its own file.
  • rotate — Rotate all pages or the pages listed by 90, 180 or 270 degrees.
  • delete-pages — Remove the pages listed and keep everything else.
  • page-numbers — Number every page or a range, in the position and format you choose.
  • bates — Sequential, zero-padded document numbers across one or many PDFs.
  • watermark — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT or any text — diagonal, tiled, header or footer.
  • add-text — Stamp a line or a few lines of text at a corner or the centre.
  • crop — Cut a fixed margin from each side; nothing is re-rendered.
  • resize-pages — Make every page A4, Letter, Legal, A5 or A3, content scaled and centred.
  • nup — Two or four pages per sheet to save paper.
  • protect — AES-256 password to open, and/or block printing and copying.
  • unlock — Remove a password and restrictions from a PDF you have the password for.
  • metadata — Set title, author, subject, keywords — or strip every trace before sharing.
  • flatten — Burn filled form fields in and remove comments and markup.
  • repair — Rebuild a damaged file with a clean structure.
  • extract-images — Save the JPEG images embedded in a PDF as files.
  • pdf-to-text — The text layer with paragraphs preserved, as .txt or .md.
  • summarise — Key sentences ranked and cited by page, or the passages that answer a question.
  • inspect — Eighteen checks: fonts, images, text layer, tags, language, scripts, attachments, metadata.

Rendering tools — OCR, PDF to Word/JPG/Excel/PowerPoint/EPUB, compress, sign, redact, grayscale and the workflow builder — stay in the browser toolkit, which also runs without upload.

Privacy, in one sentence

pdfco makes no network connections of its own: it reads the files you name, writes new files beside them, and every result ends with "Processed on this machine — 0 bytes uploaded." The engines are the open-source pdf-lib and pdf.js, bundled inside.

Questions

Is anything uploaded?

No. pdfco runs on your computer, makes no network connections and never sends a file anywhere — the same promise as the website. The only download is the tool itself, once.

What do I need to install?

Claude Desktop users: nothing — the .mcpb bundle includes everything. Terminal, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code users need Node.js 18 or newer (free, from nodejs.org); npx then fetches pdfco automatically on first use.

Where do the output files go?

Next to the input file, with a suffix such as -merged or -protected; existing files are never overwritten unless you ask. Use --out-dir or --output to choose.

Can it OCR a scan or convert PDF to Word?

Not yet — those need rendering and OCR engines that are heavier than a 2 MB download. Use the browser tools on this site for OCR, PDF to Word, JPG, Excel, PowerPoint, EPUB, compress, sign and redact; they also run without upload.

Is it free, and can I use it at work?

Yes, free for personal and commercial use. The licence asks only that you do not modify or resell it. If it saves you time, you can buy the developer a coffee.
